Well, if last week’s update was a dud as far as productivity goes, then this week’s is a doozy. I almost didn’t even want to write this post because I figured it was pointless. But I also didn’t want to leave you guys hanging wondering what the heck is going on.
If you’re just now tuning in, we are smack dab in the middle of a six week room makeover called the One Room Challenge. We’re making over our builder grade kitchen, in only six weeks, and we’re sharing all of the details along the way each week.
We were really excited about picking up the supplies for our counters and making a trip to IKEA for the sink but then the remnants of big bad Hurricane Patricia had to throw a major wrench in our plans. We live on the outskirts of Houston and if anyone knows anything about the area it’s that Houston and lots of rain do not mix. We’re talking flooding of the bayous and major roadways.
Naturally, we didn’t want to get stranded in the city, so we decided it was best to just stay put and make the trip when the weather was more cooperative. The only problem is that it meant a lot of the kitchen work was put on hold. I can’t paint the cabinets until the sink is in because we have to modify them in order for the sink to fit and not have any gaping holes.
Also, we don’t want to rip out the existing sink and counter until we have all of our supplies on hand to go forward with the sink and counter installation. I’d like to keep a working sink around and avoid the bathtub dishwashing festivities for as long as possible. So, as you can tell, a lot is riding on getting that new sink installed. We have plans to make the sink trip this week come hell or, well, not high water, but you get the point.
Much like last week, other kitchen makeover elements are trickling in slowly but surely. We have the recessed lighting trim and the sealer for the butcher block counter. My industrial pendant lights are on the way as well! I’ve managed to collect most of the decor and pretty stuff already but you’ll have to wait for the reveal to see all of that. 😉
Not the most exciting update, I know. Stick around for next week, though, because we have a week/weekend full of work to do.
Here’s another glimpse of our ever looming to-do list and progress thus far:
Take down the microwave, replace with a range vent and build a rustic wooden vent hood Extend the cabinets to the ceiling Extend the island to accommodate a new microwave Trim out the island with board and batten or planks/shiplap
- Replace island countertop with butcher block
- Paint the cabinets white and add new hardware
- Add a backsplash (I’ve been flip flopping on ideas for this but I think I’ve finally narrowed it down to a winner)
- Install new countertops
- Install farmhouse sink and new faucet
- Add new lighting over the island and sink (that big round light over the sink is a sky tube, so it will be staying)
- Paint the pantry doors black
- Add task lighting under the upper cabinets
- Replace the recessed lighting trim
- Replace the range with a new stainless steel model to match our other appliances (if I can twist my hubby’s arm)
